SAIL - The Unsung Hero

Mira, the prime-time news reporter of Jai Hind News, was wondering what to broadcast in the upcoming Republic Day.

Looking at the calendar, Mira exclaimed, “Oh no! Only 10 days are left. What will I do now?”

She wished to do something new this time, but the days were passing by, and there was not even a single new, fresh and innovative story.

Frustrated and anxious, she wondered, “Our channel is already in a lot of crisis, Republic Day is the right time to regain TRP. All I need is a buzzing news topic for this Republic Day which could depict the nation’s journey from ‘Azadi’ to ‘Amrit Kaal’.”

She took a deep breath, and planned to watch the Retreat ceremony at Wagah border. She decided to try her fortune and hope for any buzzing ideas for the Republic day.

-----------NEXT AFTERNOON----------

Mira was driving her car towards Wagah border with a blend of emotions and plans coming in and going out of her mind. She reached her destination and sat comfortably on the third stair.

Rajat, a hard-working young man, who worked as an AGM (Assistant General Manager) at the office of SAIL in Ludhiana, sat beside her.

Rajat’s phone started ringing; he picked up the phone, had a small conversation, and then started walking briskly towards the exit.

Mira found more interest in this young man’s conversation rather than the retreat ceremony, and henceforth, she followed Rajat and wished to hear what the conversation was about.

This wish of Mira got fulfilled when Rajat kept the phone on speaker mode since the sound of the ceremony was very loud.

Rajat was talking to one of his acquaintances, Madhav, who had called him to inform that he had passed the Management Trainee exam of SAIL.

Rajat congratulated him and started describing his journey from being a landless labourer in a small village to a government-officer in the developed city.

With a smile on his face, Rajat started speaking, “Do you know? I was suffering with cancer just at the age of 17! All my family members and acquaintances were clueless what to do. We did not even get a complete three-time meal a single day, and my cancer was like the worst thing possible.

But, at that time, even when my friends indeed were not in need, SAIL, a completely anonymous company for us, became my savor by providing world-class medical facilities and curing a disease as deadly as cancer…”

“By the way, how is everyone in the family?” Madhav interrupted.

Rajat replied, “Everybody is fine. This is because of the multiple facilities in our village today, just because of SAIL. Keeping this aside, let me tell you about my journey in SAIL.”

“Why not?” said Madhav.

Rajat continued, “I passed the test of SAIL and became a technician. I worked hard, and continued to study and finally became an executive officer. Today, I am an AGM.

You know, SAIL has helped me a lot in my life. Today, all my family members are proud of me and thankful to SAIL, which is the backbone of our thriving country, India.”

“This is fine. But, has SAIL made any contributions towards making India a developed nation?” Madhav questioned with inquisitiveness and curiosity.

“Definitely. It has made infinite contributions towards making of today’s India.

Have you heard the name of Atal Tunnel? SAIL has contributed in it. Have you heard the name of INS Vikrant? SAIL has contributed in it too. SAIL has contributed in other big projects also, like Purvanchal Expressway, Dhola Sadiya and Bogibeel.

SAIL is behind the development in every single field - from a needle to the Chandrayaan; from transportation to housing; from irrigation to railways; constructing roads, bridges and tunnels; and also boosting the nation’s defence.

SAIL also justifies the same through its tagline, There’s a little bit of SAIL in everybody’s life…”

“But after listening to all this, I would rather say, There’s a lot of SAIL in everybody’s life…” Madhav busted with his emotions.

“That’s true. Oh no! I just forgot the time. Sorry brother, I have to hang the call now. Hope you are in pink health. Bye!”

Rajat hanged the phone and began running towards the exit gate. Mira was just flabbergasted!

“WOOHOO!!!!” Mira exclaimed joyfully.

“SAIL, the unsung hero of our country. From a needle, to the Chandrayaan, there’s a little bit of SAIL... Yes, yes, yes!!!” She was talking to herself.

Wonderful ideas started flashing in Mira’s mind. She was all-set to prepare her new cover story - something special for this republic day. She realized that the phone call was a long conversation and the ceremony had been over since a couple of minutes. Mira also walked

towards the exit gate, simultaneously thinking about SAIL-The Unsung Hero.
