India's Heritage : The 'Magical' Temples of Ganesha

Everything, which looks ‘magical’ to us, is either an illusion, or has a hidden reason, unknown to us. Today, let us have a glance of some famous temples of Ganpati Bappa, known for their ‘Maanyta’, and uncover the reason(s) behind them.

The ‘Magical’ Temples of Ganesha

1. Shree Siddhivinayak Temple, Mumbai, Maharashtra :

This temple is said to fulfill the desires of its devotees. It got its name when Lord Vishnu worshipped Lord Ganesha, in order to control 2 demons; Madhu and Kaitabha. Lord Vishnu achieved success at this place by worshipping Lord Ganesha. Therefore, it was named Siddhivinayak (Siddhi = accomplishment + Vinayak = remover of obstacles). The idol of Ganesha is said to be Sanjeevan (resuscitative), which means ‘revival from apparent death / unconsciousness’.

2. Shri Chintaman Ganesh Temple, Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh :

This temple is said to remove all the worries of its devotees. It got its name when Lord Brahma meditated and prayed Lord Ganesha for peace of mind. Lord Ganesha made his mind stable, by removing all his worldly anxieties. This is why another name for Lord Ganesha is Chintaharan (Chinta = tension + Haran = taking away). Lord Brahma worshipped Lord Ganesha at this place, and hence the idol begun to be called as Chintaman (assurer of freedom from problems).

3. Trinetra Ganesh Temple, Ranthambore Fort, Rajasthan :

This temple is said to bless devotees seeking solace. It got its name when King Hammiradeva worshipped Lord Ganesha seeking peace in the ‘Siege of Ranthambore’ (a war). His godown, earlier filled with wealth started getting exhausted due to shortage of weapons in the battle. He was blessed by Lord Ganesha, who had ended the war and filled his godown again with wealth. It is the only temple in the world which houses the entire family of Lord Ganesha.
